It appears as though the New York Mets have avoided a worst-case scenario of sorts regarding slugger Pete Alonso ’s right hand after being hit by a pitch during Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Alonso was removed from Wednesday’s game in the first inning when he was hit by a James Paxton 93-mph fastball while trying to check his swing. The team did not provide an initial update other than to confirm that he would undergo imaging, though manager Carlos Mendoza said x-rays were “normal.” The first baseman had appeared in each of the Mets’ first 55 games this season but had struggled for long stretches of it, slashing .231/.308/.453 with 12 home runs and 26 RBI. Headlining an inconsistent offense, the Mets are already off to a disastrous start having sunk to 11 games under .500.
Without him for a prolonged stretch, it would have been that much more difficult for the team to claw its way out of the doldrums. Instead, his absence will be minimal.Pantorno is the executive sports editor of amNewYork — a position he has held since January 2020.
