FILE - Rochester police cars are seen near the scene of a shooting on Dayton Street, Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Rochester, N.Y. — A man was sentenced Friday to 16 years to life in prison for a shooting last summer on the city's north side, according to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office.
A jury convicted Jahmel Jackson, 31, of second-degree assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon for shooting a 22-year-old man who was found outside of a home on Dayton Street in Rochester the night of July 17, 2025, prosecutors said. The victim was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries but ended up surviving after medical staff stabilized him and saved his life, according to the Rochester Police Department. This defendant chose to settle a personal dispute with a firearm, putting not only the victim, but everyone outside enjoying a June evening at risk,” Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hogestyn said in a statement. “This was a brazen shooting that left a 22-year-old man fighting for his life. While we are grateful that the victim survived, he will carry physical and emotional scars of that night forever.Every time someone chooses to pick up a gun to resolve a dispute, our entire community pays the price,” District Attorney Brian Green said in a statement. “While we are lucky that today’s sentence is one for assault and gun possession, rather than a homicide, as a persistent violent felony offender, Jahmel Jackson has shown a pattern of dangerous behavior that cannot be tolerated. With today’s sentence, he will no longer pose a threat to our community.Rochester, N.Y. — Less than one month after opening, the city's first Chick-fil-A restaurant has closed temporarily but does have a reopening date set.Sodus, N.Y. — The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash Friday morning on State Route 104, according to Sheriff Rob Milby. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it's conducting a "thorough" investigation after a deputy shot and killed a dog Thursday evening.A former Geneva police officer accused of selling drugs has pleaded guilty, according to the special prosecutor in the case. What started as a typical winter day for Lisa Poente quickly turned into a stressful cleanup when water from ice dams suddenly began leaking into her house.
