The award haul matches PennLive’s personal best of 21 honors also achieved in 2020, 2017 and 2016. And it marks the eighth-straight year PennLive took honors for its real-time breaking news reporting. In all, PennLive has received 11 of the past 23 overall awards in the important category. Smith, in his first full year with PennLive, won the Calkins Family Distinguished Video Award, a specialty category presented to just one video journalist. The visual storytelling that helped Smith capture this honor included videos featuring victims of gun violence, the cold case ‘Shopkeeper Killings’ from 1960s Harrisburg, a PIAA 4A State Championship Recap video and Mic’D Up with Steelton Highspire Football.
Joshua Vaughn won second place in the highly competitive Investigative Reporting category for his in-depth reporting on a series of deaths inside the Dauphin County Prison.Second Place, for a package of stories about a downtown shooting that devastated a family, by reporters Christine Vendel, Jenna Wise, Becky Metrick and Charles Thompson.
