The president’s support for the agreement alienates those on the far left and McCarthy’s acceptance angers many on the far right.

Although Republicans should not have threatened to refuse to raise the debt ceiling to fund the nation’s obligations, and despite there being facets in a compromise agreement in principle that are objectionable, I applaud President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy for hammering out a package which both could accept. Neither man can claim a complete victory.

I appreciate that Speaker McCarthy ignored the reckless coaching from former President Trump, that Republicans should accept nothing less than precisely what they demanded, and that if they do not get it, that they should “do a default.” The president’s support for the agreement alienates those on the far left and McCarthy’s acceptance angers many on the far right, most notably the members of the so-called Freedom Caucus, all of whom are disrupters.

There are members of Congress who did not vote for the package, but I am confident that a sufficient number from both parties acquiesced to avert a catastrophe. The can has now been kicked down the road to 2025 when there will surely be another standoff which makes the world nervous. Might the two sides the next time begin negotiations before calamity is at the front door?If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
