For the first time ever, hockey is coming to the Nittany Lions’ football field and it’s all part of Penn State's first-ever winter sports weekend.From hockey to wrestling, basketball, volleyball, track and field, tennis, swimming and diving, Penn State’s winter athletes will be competing all weekend long in what the university is calling its first-ever winter sports weekend.
For the first time ever, the Nittany Lions football field is hosting ice hockey! Penn State’s women’s team will kick things off, hosting Robert Morris on Friday at 1 p.m., and that game is free for fans to attend. Then on Saturday, also beginning at 1 p.m., the men’s team takes on second ranked Michigan State, with tickets still available online.Penn State says the men’s team will arrive at Beaver Stadium at 11 a.m., with a full football style welcome, including the Blue Band, cheerleaders, Lionettes and the Nittany Lion.“I don't know, we don't know what to anticipate, it’s something that you are definitely going to keep in mind. It’s going to be interesting, we are going to try to approach it and play our best game but I’m sure there are going to be factors we haven't thought about that are going to affect things like shift length, etc., it’s going to be interesting, both teams are going to have to adapt very well,” says men’s hockey head coach Guy Gadowsky.Penn State is fresh off two shutout wins over Delaware and has clinched the Atlantic Hockey America regular season title for the fourth straight year.“It's an amazing, historic place to be able to play. To be on the same field as some of the great athletes at Penn State; players can’t wait, they grew up playing on ponds, on lakes, on whatever; this is going to like bring them back to childhood and those memories and we're obviously in a competitive situation wanting to win and things like that, but at the end of the day, it's about having fun, enjoying the sport that you love and this is an opportunity to rekindle those feelings that they know are the reason that they got into hockey.”Three current players on the women’s team have been named to their national rosters for the 2026 Winter Olympics, including sophomore forward Tessa Janecke, who will represent Team USA. “It's always an honor to get to throw on your flag, so just being able to take in that moment and appreciating what's led you to that moment, and obviously I have appreciation for Penn State and my teammates and teammates in the past as well. I think it's just cool to see how many people are actually going in and getting to represent their country. It's cool to see, it's good for the league to have anyone going to the Olympics.” Beyond the college games, State College Area High School’s varsity hockey team will also take the ice at Beaver Stadium on Thursday night against Altoona, with puck drop set for 6:15 p.m.The rink wasn’t just reserved for sports usage.
