Penn State quarterback Drew Allar led the Nittany Lions to a 31-14 victory over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, earning a spot in the Orange Bowl. Despite an early Boise State comeback, Penn State's dominant performance on both sides of the ball secured their win.
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was instrumental in securing a 31-14 victory over No. 8 Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on Tuesday night. The Nittany Lions, who opened their first College Football Playoff berth with a blowout win over SMU, appeared headed for another lopsided victory in the new 12-team format by jumping to a 14-0 lead against Boise State . The Broncos, however, known for their resilience, fought back from the early deficit.
They closed to 17-14 on Matt Lauter's 53-yard touchdown catch midway through the third quarter. Allar responded with his second touchdown pass to John Mackey Award winner Tyler Warren, and Nick Singleton added a 58-yard touchdown run, propelling the Nittany Lions to the Jan. 9 Orange Bowl against No. 2 Georgia or No. 3 Notre Dame. Penn State's dominance was evident in their control over the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, effectively shutting down Boise State's running game. Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty, who had been a consistent threat throughout the season, was held to a season-low 104 yards on 30 carries. Allar, who had faced criticism for his perceived lack of excitement and game-managing style, was sharp throughout the game, connecting with Warren for an 11-yard touchdown and then Omari Evans for a 38-yard score. While Boise State managed to pressure Allar and even forced a fumble, the momentum shifted decisively back to Penn State after their strong second-half performance
