How observation, family helped Pearland's David Rogers make shift from umpiring to coaching

PEARLAND — There have been a handful of occasions this season when David Rogers calmly stormed from the dugout. That’s because after 26 years of elite-level umpiring, one develops a tranquil demeanor in the most explosive of situations.

“I got out of umpiring when I was 50, so I’m just in my 12th year of coaching,” Rogers said. “I worked my first two years with my brother Mike at Alvin, and he was a big, big influence in my life as far as coaching goes.” Rogers then landed his first head coaching job at Clear Lake in 2018 before being hired at Pearland for the 2020 season. As an umpire in college baseball, Rogers possessed an all-star résumé after starting in the Southwest Conferece in 1989.

“I never burned any bridges, and I still keep in contact with a lot of those that know me from the umpiring world. I get suggestions and advice from everywhere.”“One thing that I really took note of through my umpiring career concerns those eight baseball teams which go to Omaha,” he said. “Those are eight different personalities, eight different beliefs, eight different ways to do things, and eight different organizational make-ups.
