MANILA, Philippines -- The teams of the Philippine Basketball Association cannot resume their practices just yet.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial initially pegged the resumption of training for July 22, but this will be delayed by at least "a few days," according to a report on the league website.

This is because the league has yet to receive an official go-signal from the government, in the form of a Joint Administrative Order from the Games and Amusements Board , the Department of Health, and the Philippine Sports Commission. "I had a talk with GAB chairman Baham Mitra… He expects to get the administrative order this week," Marcial said.

The Inter-Agency Task Force approved the PBA's protocols for teams' return to practice last July 3, but without the implementing rules and regulations from the government, the league cannot give their teams an official green light. The PBA has already penalized one team, the Blackwater Elite, for a premature return to training sessions. GAB is also mulling sanctions against the franchise despite an apology given by team owner Dioceldo Sy.

The "little delay" has not dented Marcial's optimism that PBA can still push through with practices, and hopefully, with scrimmages by August. The PBA Board of Governors and Marcial will decide in August whether or not to resume the PBA season, which was halted in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
