The pavement heave is located in Toms River near Exit 82.
Emergency repairs were underway to fix a “pavement heave” on the southbound side of Garden State Parkway that has caused multi-mile delays in Ocean County, officials said.
A pavement heave is a ripple or crack in the asphalt that can be caused by moisture under the pavement that is subjected to high temperatures. The asphalt can be compromised when the heat causes the water underneath it to turn into steam. The heave is located at milepost 82.7 in Toms River and has forced the closure of the right lane.
“Emergency repairs are underway but are likely to take several hours,” the official Garden State Parkway Twitter/X account posted around 6 p.m. “The right lane will remain closed until they’re completed.” At one point, traffic delays stretched as far as 15 miles on southbound side of the major New Jersey highway.
As of 8:30 p.m., there were no crashes or injuries reported as a result of the uneven roadway, a New Jersey State Police spokesman told NJ Advance Media. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
