When They Call You a Terrorist
Cullors grew up in a strict faith community but questioned their beliefs. She started reckoning with her identity as a queer person in a patriarchal religion that disagreed with gay marriage and saw men as unquestioned leaders. And she was a Black teen who attended mostly white schools. But from that separateness, she says she figured out what she truly believed and could see the world more clearly. It informed the type of organizing she would go on to do.
“What freedom looks like,” she continues, “what democracy looks like, is the push for and realization of justice, dignity and peace.”Cullors weaves her family’s story throughout the book: her father’s years in jail, her brother’s struggles with addiction and mental illness, growing up in southern California during the Reagan and Clinton years, when the War on Drugs was raging.
