Legendary NBA coach Pat Riley's foresight in trademarking the term 'three-peat' is set to benefit him as the Kansas City Chiefs aim for their third consecutive Super Bowl victory. Riley, who never achieved a three-peat himself, will profit from the Chiefs' merchandise sales, donating all proceeds to his family foundation.

Pat Riley, a legendary NBA coach, might be the biggest Kansas City Chiefs fan today. Nearly four decades ago, Riley was ahead of his time. After securing his second consecutive championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1988, he aimed for a three-peat. However, Riley's business acumen kicked in, and he filed a trademark for the term 'three-peat.' A search of the United States Patent and Trademark directory reveals that Riles & Company Inc., owned by Riley, holds the rights to the term.

Riley, unfortunately, couldn't capitalize on his foresight as the Lakers fell to the Detroit Pistons the following season. But when the Chicago Bulls achieved three consecutive championships in 1993, Riley's pockets grew. He also benefited financially when the Bulls completed another three-peat in 1998 and when the New York Yankees accomplished the feat in 2000.No professional North American sports team has claimed three consecutive titles since the Lakers, led by Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal, from 2000 to 2002. Now, the Kansas City Chiefs are striving to become the first NFL team to secure three consecutive Super Bowl victories. The Chiefs and Riley have reached an agreement allowing the Chiefs to sell 'three-peat' merchandise. While the exact percentage of Riley's profit remains undisclosed, he intends to donate all proceeds to the Pat Riley Family Foundation. Typically, licensees pay a royalty of 10% to 15% on the price of an item featuring a trademarked logo. If the Chiefs fall short of their three-peat goal, it will mark the Philadelphia Eagles' second championship after their first in 2018. This marks the Chiefs' fifth Super Bowl appearance in the last six seasons.
