The state's largest school district has released two cost-saving proposals that could shutter or consolidate dozens of elementary schools.
Seattle schools are looking to save tens of millions of dollars with a new plan for the 2025-2026 school year but families are already pushing back a day after theFor many families, Seattle's McGilvra Elementary is a community of strong relationships and student learning during what's been a challenging transition out of the pandemic.
“When other cities have done mass closures, like Chicago, they've seen long-term learning loss including from students whose schools were open, but who absorbed more students,” parent Alice Appleton argued. “This district seems to think that it knows what's best for kids more than their parents, and that's troubling.”
“This is an incredible, beautiful historic building. Imagine it just vacant. I mean, what are you going to do with a location like this?” parent Amber Ray Cruz asked. “Not only is this shutting down our community center, it's also splitting up our community. So, half of my daughter's friends brought to one school and then the other half another one.” Cruz referenced her frustration with the updated school boundaries outlined in the proposals.
In response, SPS said it understands families' frustrations, and they will continue to listen to public input at district board meetings before a vote expected in December.
