Paramount+ hit Star Trek fans with a major shock when it announced that the sophomore season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be its last. While the cancellation is due to Starfleet Academy not meeting Paramount's desired ratings, rather than the intense vitriol the series received since its premiere, it is still a major blow to the Star Trek franchise and to Paramount+.

Paramount+ was always considered to be the weakest player in the"streaming wars", and Star Trek served as one of the major franchises that gave it a leg up. Starfleet Academy's cancellation, combined with hitmaker Taylor Sheridan's departure from Paramount for Universal, has effectively cut that metaphorical leg off. The timing couldn't be worse, especially since most streaming services are leaning heavily into science fiction shows. Apple TV is delivering hit after hit, with the latest being Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Hulu's found its next big series in Paradise. Prime Video's Fallout serves as both a great video game adaptation and an entertaining watch in its own right. In contrast, Paramount+ just ended its premier science fiction franchise, removing yet another advantage it could use against its competitors. It's especially galling since Starfleet Academy could have truly launched a new era of Star Trek. Related Put These Shows on Ice — The Collider TV Quiz! Posts By Macklen Makhloghi 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Was Canceled Before It Could Reach its True Potential The frustrating part about Starfleet Academy's cancellation is that it felt like the series was starting to hit its stride. That growth is reflected in the main cast of characters, as each ends Season 1 in a significantly different place than where they started. Caleb Mir begins distrusting Starfleet after his mother's disappearance , yet slowly comes to believe in its tenets. Klingon Jay-Den has taken an oath of non-violence, a sharp contrast to the rest of his species, and it is tested throughout the season. SAM seeks to move beyond her programming, in the vein of iconic Star Trek characters like Data and Spock, despite the hardships she encounters. Cutting Starfleet Academy short after two seasons robs these characters of that growth. Starfleet Academy also manages the extremely rare combination of paying homage to past incarnations of Star Trek while forging its own identity. The series takes place in the aftermath of the"Burn," an intergalactic disaster that decimated Starfleet and shook the galaxy to its core. By forming a new class of Starfleet cadets, Starfleet Academy showcases that Starfleet's legacy will outlive the tragedy of the Burn. The series also featured other Trek icons, especially The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, and paid homage to other Trek series, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Despite the online hate slung its way, it's clear that the cast and crew of Starfleet Academy have a deep love for everything Star Trek, and they deserved more seasons to explore that love. Posts 17 By Jake Hodges Paramount+ Has Effectively Brought an End to the Current Era of Star Trek There's more to Starfleet Academy's cancellation than just cutting a promising series short. It effectively ends a decade of Star Trek television, which began all the way back with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The last time this happened was when Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled in 2005, though the franchise bounced back with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek in 2009. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the script for Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, has more or less served as the de facto head of all things Star Trek. With Starfleet Academy's cancellation, Kurtzman's future with the franchise is now up in the air. That doesn't mean that Paramount is willing to fully give up on Star Trek. Per an official statement, the studio reaffirmed that it still has plans for the iconic sci-fi franchise: "We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate." Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was a series that celebrated the legacy of Star Trek and had the chance to stand out in the sci-fi landscape, yet it was cut down before it could truly shine. This approach may end up hurting Paramount+ in the long run. 9 10 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action & Adventure Drama Sci-Fi Release Date January 15, 2026 Network Paramount+ Showrunner Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau Directors Douglas Aarniokoski, Alex Kurtzman, Andi Armaganian, Larry Teng Writers Gaia Violo, Alex Taub, Jane Maggs, Tawny Newsome, Kirsten Beyer, Kiley Rossetter, Eric Anthony Glover Cast See All
