Oscar Isaac lit by a flashlight in Annihilation

Writer-director Alex Garland has a good thing going with A24, shepherding the distributor into the big leagues with the dystopian thriller Civil War a couple of years ago. Civil War was the most expensive title that A24 had put its might behind, although it has since been overtaken by Marty Supreme.

The progress will continue, fittingly, with Garland, who is putting together an adaptation of the fantasy video game Elden Ring, which will likely be the most expensive project in A24's history. However, between their first and second movies together, Garland made a sci-fi film that was distributed by Paramount domestically. But it was deemed too cerebral for a theatrical release in international markets. The movie is slated to be removed from the Paramount+ platform soon, which means that if you haven't checked it out yet, you might want to act quickly. The film in question was just as highbrow as Garland and A24's first project together, Ex Machina, starring Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson. Isaac returned to play a supporting role in Garland's follow-up, which was headlined by Natalie Portman and featured Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The movie was released theatrically in the United States in 2018, although international markets received it on Netflix. Because of this unusual release strategy, the film was unable to recoup its reported $50 million budget in theaters. Related The Battle of the Chrises — The Collider Movie Quiz! Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Here's How Long You Have Left To Watch Alex Garland's High-Concept Sci-Fi Movie on Paramount+ We're talking, of course, about Annihilation — the mind-bending sci-fi gem that includes perhaps the most memorable bear in cinema since The Revenant. Annihilation received positive reviews and is now sitting at a"Certified Fresh" 88% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads,"Annihilation backs up its sci-fi visual wonders and visceral genre thrills with an impressively ambitious — and surprisingly strange — exploration of challenging themes that should leave audiences pondering long after the end credits roll." Garland returned to A24 with the horror film Men, which was followed by Civil War. Along the way, he also wrote three follow-ups to 28 Days Later, of which two — 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — have already been released. The status of the third film remains uncertain because of the underperformance of The Bone Temple earlier this year. You can watch Annihilation on Paramount+, but only until May 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
