A large brush fire fueled by strong winds broke out in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, forcing evacuations and threatening several structures.
Strong winds continued to batter Southern California, fueling a large brush fire in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades on Tuesday. Fire crews battled a handful of fast-moving fires across the Los Angeles hillsides, forcing residents in the Pacific Palisades area to evacuate. The Palisades Fire consumed about 772 acres of dry brush by 2 p.m. PT, sending up a massive plume of smoke visible across the city. Residents in Venice Beach, some 6 miles away, reported seeing flames.
The blaze is one of nearly 8,000 wildfires that scorched over 1,560 square miles in California last year. Several structures are threatened by the fire, with video from the scene showing at least two homes ablaze and a dozen more in danger. Road closures along the Pacific Coast Highway caused heavy traffic congestion. FOX 11's Hailey Winslow spoke to Tricia Cosentino, who attempted to flee along Palisades Drive but was forced to turn around due to choking smoke, flames, and heavy traffic. Cosentino described being surrounded by flames, with smoke everywhere, and said she made a U-turn because she was afraid to drive through it. She said the canyon had unstable land, with rocks crumbling onto the road, and the flames were coming down within a foot or two of the road. Cosentino said she and her family had never been so terrified. When asked why she didn't leave earlier, Cosentino said they had always been able to leave in previous close calls
