A brush fire ignited in the Pacific Palisades Tuesday, burning 20 acres as the region braces for dangerous fire weather conditions. The blaze underscores the heightened risk of wildfires due to powerful Santa Ana winds and a 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service.
A brush fire in the Pacific Palisades burned through 20 acres Tuesday amid warnings of weather conditions bringing 'extreme' risks of quickly moving wildfires, authorities said. Many parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including the coastal area where the blaze was reported, are facing a 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' red flag warning , a relatively rare advisory the National Weather Service issues in more extreme cases of critical fire weather.
The same warning was issued just before the Mountain Fire tore through nearly 20,000 acres late last year. The blaze reported Tuesday is located near 1190 North Piedra Morada Dr., according to an alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department issued at 10:30 a.m. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has been preparing additional resources to handle the possibility of wildfires sparking easily and moving quickly given the weather conditions in Southern California this week. Much of the region will see powerful Santa Ana winds, with gusts reaching up to around 60 to 70 mph in many areas and up to 100 mph in a few areas.'This will likely be a life-threatening, destructive, and widespread windstorm,' the National Weather Service said Tuesday, adding that the 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' warning will be in effect from noon Tuesday through 4 p.m. for areas including Malibu. In December, the coastal community faced the more than 4,000-acre Franklin Fire which destroyed more than two dozen structures, including a number of homes.
