Padres veteran throws three simulated innings before series finale vs. Mets

With teammates and personnel crowded around the turtle shell, the 38-year-old veteran threw 54 pitches over three simulated “innings” against five Lake Elsinore Storm hitters, the next step in the progression toward rejoining the Padres’ rotation next month.
“As long as I’ve been away from the game, I felt I threw pretty well,” Darvish said through interpreter. “Maybe the last hitter, it was a walk, but other than that no walks in the simulated game. So all in all, I think it was pretty good.”The next step is stretching his workload from four to five innings, although it has not decided if that will occur in a setting like Sunday’s or on an actual minor league rehab assignment.
Darvish began Sunday’s work by taking grounders from Horie in right field.
