said, because his second baseman felt like his left groin was about to pop.“Way better than I thought he’d doing,” Melvin said of Odor’s status Saturday afternoon. “I thought it would be an IL for sure today and is saying there’s a chance he could be available at some point in time here the next couple days. Each and every day will tell the tale, but I think they are going to get him out here and see if he can do some baseball stuff, maybe hit in the cage.
The Padres’ next off day is Thursday in Colorado and it appears the team is entertaining the idea of playing shorthanded a few days to see if Odor — their sparkplug of late — is able to avoid the injured list. “I think he will,” Melvin said. “I do. We’ll see how he is come tomorrow. We have a couple days and then an off day, if he doesn’t respond from today until tomorrow. But I feel pretty good about it right now.”
