Padres catching prospect Ethan Salas played two games as a rare 16-year-old at a full-season affiliate before his 17th birthday on Thursday
in spring training, getting into a Cactus League game on the big-league side, getting at-bats against pitchers advanced as Mariners up-and-comerand rotating between catcher and DH during extended spring training games the last month-plus .
Even with the shoulder setback, Salas hit the ground running in Lake Elsinore this week, doubling at the end of an eight-pitch at-bat in his first professional plate appearance on Tuesday and reaching base seven times in his first eight plate appearances. Because the Padres are mindful of his shoulder, he’s expected at least at the start of the assignment to split time evenly between DH and catcher and be limited to seven innings when he is behind the plate.
Off the field, the Padres are especially mindful of the support-system around the teenager. He’ll room with teammates in a team-provided housing as mandated by Major League Baseball at the start of the 2022 season. He’s also plenty of familiar with Storm athletic trainerfrom their time together at the Padres’ Dominican facility, as well as complex hitting coachduring his team-scheduled break.
Of course, Salas’ own background figures to be biggest guidepost of all as he acclimates to pro ball away from the Padres’ complex., signed with the Marlins for $2.8 million in 2019 and is currently a top prospect in the Twins system after his inclusion in theswap. Also, Salas’ father played in the Braves system, an uncle played in the Blue Jays’ system and a grandfather played in the Astros’ and Royals’ system.
