Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. heads to Double-A San Antonio to start rehab assignment
Tatis, after all, was part of the deal when Melvin decided to move on from Oakland to helm the Padres.Sounds like he’ll see it again soon enough.
How long Tatis will be with Padron and the Missions will hinge a great deal on the health of his left wrist, which passed another scan before he was allowed to start a rehab assignment, as well as how quickly he regains his timing and maintains his stamina. “I think we’ve been pretty consistent saying we want to take it day by day,” Melvin said. “I don’t think we have a set amount of at-bats. You’d like to get a guy back here when he’s swinging the bat pretty well, too. We are later in the season. This isn’t going to be a three-week process to get him back here. So we’ll just take it day-to-day and see where he is physically and how he’s doing at the plate.
Melvin isn’t concerned after watching Myers play first base earlier this week, his first action there since 2020.
