Fernando Tatis Jr. launches homers in first on-field batting practice since March surgery; Dinelson Lamet recalled
“He’s in a group today, just so you know,” said manager Bob Melvin, who was conducting his pregame media briefing at the time. “Kind of a big deal. Get your camera phones and all that stuff.”
Tatis, who had surgery in mid-March to repair a fractured scaphoid bone in his left wrist, took soft-toss on the field in New York. What happened Tuesday was another significant step. There has been no official timeline given. But by Melvin’s reckoning that Tatis won’t face pitchers until next week, it would seem the earliest he could return would be a three-game series against the Giants on Aug. 8.No matter what the examination and imaging of MacKenzie Gore’s left elbow reveals, he will be resting for a while.
“It wasn’t that one pitch, which is hopefully a good thing,” Gore said. “Just some discomfort and soreness around it. Hopefully that’s it is.”Even before he walked off the field with an athletic trainer Monday night, it would not have been surprising to see Gore headed for an extended rest. This was not like the other times his velocity dipped. His 92.7 mph average last night was not only his lowest of the season, he topped out at 94.6 mph in his first inning and didn’t get above 92.
