Xander Bogaerts OK’d for return to play; Manny Machado serves as DH for fourth time in five games; Ha-Seong Kim’s discipline starting to lead to hits; Eguy Rosario continues work in out…

The Padres’ Xander Bogaerts acknowledges the crowd at Fenway Park as they give him a standing ovation on Friday. Bogaerts played for the Red Sox from 2013-22. “I’m ready to go,” he said Tuesday afternoon.Bogaerts’ timeline since he fractured a bone in his left shoulder diving for a ball at second base on May 20 has been more aggressive than what doctors projected. But everyone is aligned now, and Bogaerts will likely join Triple-A El Paso in the next day or two to begin playing in games.

“We’re looking at the long haul,” he said. “Trying to keep me healthy throughout the year and keep me in the lineup. So whenever we can get a nice little stretch of days off my feet, its’ going to work out at the end of the year.” No qualifying hitter in the major leagues has swung at fewer pitches in the strike zone than Kim has in 2024.

“I think there’s always room for improvement,” Kim said through interpreter David Lee. “But I think that every year I’ve seen better numbers in terms of not swinging at bad pitches. So I think it’s a positive to look at.”Kim’s overall numbers are down. He finished June batting .228/.336/.388 with 10 home runs. That puts him slightly ahead of pace to surpass his home run total from last year but well below his cumulative numbers from what were career highs across the board in 2023.

At first, that resulted in a lot of walks — 11 of them versus just seven hits in 58 plate appearances from June 4 to 20. Now, his hitting numbers are rising. Kim took a nine-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s game, during which he was batting .344 with a .400 on-base percentage.
