There was finally something Jackson Merrill did that he couldn’t be stoic about; Austin Davis is the Padres’ newest reliever, and he is pretty much a new reliever
Fans, including Jackson Merrill’s mom, Jennie, in Padres jersey with arms outstretched, watch the ball from Merrill’s three-run homer against the Red Sox on Friday. He is exuberant on the field and has been a favorite of teammates since spring training for his earnestness and love the of the game. But mostly, regarding his own accomplishments, he gives a shrug and talks about how he’s just playing baseball the same as he always has.
It was the Padres’ second nine-run inning of the season. They did it May 31 at Kansas City, as well, and are the only team in the major leagues to have scored at least that many runs in an inning twice in 2024. His goal after suffering a fracture in his left shoulder diving for a ball on May 20 was to be back in a month, even if the doctors’ timeline was two to three months. A part of the impetus for that goal was that it would mean he was playing in this series against his former team.
He will have another CT scan Monday to assess the healing in his glenoid bone. If all is a go, he could begin a rehab assignment next week. His goal is to return before the All-Star break, though a return for the series that begins July 19 in Cleveland immediately after the break could be more realistic.
Davis, who has a 5.61 ERA over 136 games with four big-league teams, was at Fenway Park and pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Manager Mike Shildt said Davis will essentially take the place of Tom Cosgrove, who was placed on the injured list with elbow inflammation. Last night, Davis threw nine cutters, six sweepers and five sinkers. He did not have a cutter before last year. He started throwing the sinker in 2022 but hardly used it that season. Gone now are his four-seam fastball, changeup and curve.
“I feel good,” he said. “But I’m not getting ahead of myself. … I’m trying to progress and not have any setbacks.”
