Pirates’ error in ninth inning helps Padres to 14th victory in 16 games
David Peralta, right, celebrates as he returns to the dugout after hitting a two-run home run off Pirates starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz. Thursday, they ended up being lucky, which might not be better but still worked just fine.
That allowed not only Xander Bogaerts, who began the inning with an infield single, to score but also Jackson Merrill, who had walked, to race home to make it 6-5. Tuesday’s rain delay and Wednesday’s 10-inning madness made even the Padres blowing a lead as big as four runs for just the second time this season and then winning anyway seem somewhat dull.
For all the strategic moves the Padres made with the bullpen at the trade deadline, a desperation move on Thursday could not help. Yuki Matsui ended the inning on a groundout to preserve the Padres’ 4-3 lead but surrendered Joey Bart’s two-run homer in the seventh inning. The second blast was a high fly ball by David Peralta that sailed out of the ballpark and almost bounced into the Allegheny River following Jackson Merrill’s single leading off the second inning.
