Donovan Solano’s 4 RBIs, Bryan Hoeing’s 3⅔ scoreless innings boost Padres after rain delay of nearly 3 hours
PITTSBURGH — The Padres lost starting pitcher Dylan Cease’s services after one inning due to the rain and a clogged drain. After a delay of two hours, 40 minutes, the game resumed in the middle of the second inning. Three innings later, the Padres scored four times. And then they rode Bryan Hoeing’s 3⅔ innings and 4⅓ more scoreless innings cobbled together by Adrián Morejón, Jason Adam, Tanner Scott and Jeremiah Estrada to their 12th victory in 14 games.
It was pouring a short while later, and the game was stopped immediately after the final out in the top of the second inning — 17 minutes after the first pitch had been thrown. Cease took the mound to warm up about four minutes before that. Padres players also took the field to jog and throw the ball around. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, due up first for the Pirates, stood on the dirt by the on-deck circle, ready to bat. Home plate umpire John Bacon was also behind the batter’s circle with his mask in hand.
The Pirates would later say the deluge that flooded the track had caused the drainage system to be overrun by dirt. It was a repeat of an issue that occurred during their Saturday game against the Diamondbacks. The grounds crew worked for another 70 minutes, as umpires, various players, coaches and both managers milled about in the outfield. Umpire crew chief Andy Fletcher was on the phone frequently, as the league and officials from both teams worked to determine whether the field was safe.
