Padres continue to hit ball hard, just two are homers this time; Profar's ninth-inning blast makes game seem closer than it was

A day later, there was no explanation for what occurred at Petco Park on Friday night.

But just half of those dozen hard hits by the Padres’ were base hits. And one of those was a 103.2 mph grounder up the middle by Profar that would have scored CJ Abrams from second base and tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning had it not hit second base umpire Jerry Lane. The ball was dead, and because Layne was in front of the infielders the runner could not advance.

Buxton’s 111.1 mph blast to the second balcony on the Western Metal building was the hardest-hit ball of the game. It was also the only ball hit harder than 96.6 mph by a Twins player until Luis Arraez’s 102.1 mph single leading off the eighth inning against Adrian Morejón, which was followed by Carlos Correa’s 106.4 mph fly ball that traveled a projected 414 feet and over the wall in center field.

Musgrove retired the first eight batters he faced and was through four innings having allowed two hits and the one run.
