Emilio Pagan views trade as a deal that worked out for both Padres, Twins; MacKenzie Gore hoping to pitch again in 2022; Fernando Tatis Jr. making progress

No stranger to the business of baseball, Emilio Pagan has been traded three times in the offseason — from Seattle to Oakland in November to 2017, from Oakland to Tampa Bay in December 2018 and from Tampa Bay to San Diego in February 2020. Yet even a heads-up from the Padres front office couldn’t quite prepare the Pagans for the opening-day trade to Minnesota.

“I told her, you might want to stay home because A.J. is saying a trade might go down,” Pagan said. “She said, ‘Well I don’t want to miss opening day.’ I said but if you get to and I get traded you’re going to miss it anyway. Pagan at least had familiar faces with him as Chris Paddack was included in the trade that netted left-hander Taylor Rogers, minor league outfielder Brent Rooker and cash from the Twins, and former Padres manager Jayce Tingler had landed a job as Minnesota’s bench coach. It helped going to a contender, too, as the Twins began Saturday with a 1½-game lead on the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central with Pagan emerging as a key arm in Minnesota’s bullpen.

Including one start in the minors, Gore has thrown 75 innings this year, topping the 50 1/3 official frames he threw last year, although he threw a lot more than that at extended spring training while working on his mechanics.
