Padres are having a bunch go wrong, including injuries; Luis Campusano comes back from a shot to the groin to hit a home run

You know why a six- or seven- or eight-game winning streak in April or May or June is practically imperative?Your closer isn’t going to convert every save opportunity and the player you got in a trade isn’t going to hit .400 for the duration and your star players are going to get banged up.Robert Suarez blew a save for the first time in 18 tries. Luis Arraez was hitless for the fifth time in the past nine games. And Fernando Tatis Jr. did not start for the first time this season.

Arraez will hit plenty. His .184 batting average over the past nine games is not the worst stretch of his career, and he is one of 11 players in history who has been a .300 hitter every day of his career. There does not seem to be worry he will not be able to continue playing. As noted in our game preview , Tatis has been playing with the injury in his right leg for weeks. But he might not be able to be who he otherwise could be.

The Padres catcher fell facedown on the ground and then took several minutes, in obvious discomfort, to walk off a foul ball that ricocheted to a specific region between his legs in the fourth inning. There was not a male human inside Citizens Bank Park or viewing the game on television that was not wincing as they watched Campusano suffer.
