Manny Pacquiao out, as Mario Barrios gets fight on Mike Tyson-Jake Paul undercard
Apparently tired of waiting on Manny Pacquiao to make up his mind, Mario Barrios has decided to move on. After four months of negotiating to fight the future Hall of Famer ended in failure, the San Antonio welterweight announced Monday he is returning to the ring Nov.
15 to defend his WBC 147-pound crown against Abel Ramos of Casa Grande, Ariz. The 12-round bout will take place on the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul undercard at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and be streamed live globally on Netflix. “I’m thrilled to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event,” Barrios, 29, said in a statement. “The fight on the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson card is huge, with millions watching live on Netflix. Abel Ramos is a tough Mexican fighter, just like me, so I know it’ll be a hell of a fight in front of my Texas people at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium.” Barrios has not fought since a unanimous decision win over Fabian Maidana as the co-main event of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in his first defense of the WBC interim welterweight title he won by beating Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas seven months earlier. Barrios was elevated to full champion in June when Terence Crawford was declared “champion in recess” by the WBC. That’s about the time rumors of a Barrios-Pacquiao fight first surfaced. The legendary Pacquiao , at age 45, was hoping to cap a brilliant career by fighting one last time for a title against Barrios. But Pacquiao looked his age in a three-round exhibition against Rukiya Anpo of Japan in July that ended in an unofficial draw. Prior to that Pacquiao lost a 12-round decision in 2021 to Ugas. For more than a decade the lightning quick southpaw ruled the sport of boxing with signature wins over the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley and Keith Thurman. Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao’s adviser and head of his promotion company, blamed his client for moving too slow during negotiations for the Barrios fight. “It’s Manny’s fault for dragging his feet instead of accepting when it was there,” Gibbons said. “So that’s it. It’s terrible.” Pacquiao targeted Barrios because he believed Barrios’ aggressive style gave him the best chance of winning. But the two sides could not come to terms in the end. Gibbons doubts that a Barrios-Pacquiao fight will ever happen now. A former senator in his native Philippines, Pacquiao is seeking re-election in February. “It’s a shame,” Gibbons said of the failure of the Barrios-Pacquiao fight to come together. “Manny had a little window left in his career. This was a fight a lot of people thought he still had a chance to win. “Manny’s problem is he listens to a lot of people. They were throwing a lot of stuff at him. We came with a real offer. It’s sad.” Efforts to reach members of the Barrios camp were unsuccessful. Ramos appears to be a consolation prize for Barrios. A longtime welterweight contender, Ramos, 33, is considered a durable competitor, having fought such foes as Regis Prograis, Ivan Baranchyk and Ugas. His biggest win to date was a sixth-round TKO of Omar Figueroa Jr. of Weslaco in 2021. He’s coming off a fifth-round technical knockout April 19 over Juan Ramon Guzman in Tijuana on the heels of back-to-back losses to Cody Crowley and Luke Santamaria. This will be Ramos’ first world-title opportunity and Barrios’ first defense of his championship. “I’m looking forward to a great fight against Mario Barrios,” Ramos said. “He’s a warrior just like me and I’m going to give the fans an exciting fight.”
