The Transportation Security Agency confiscated an 84 mm weapon — a very big rifle — from a traveler Monday at San Antonio International Airport.from the agency’s Twitter account. The incident prompted officials to remind the public of the regulations when traveling with a firearm. The TSA intercepted a record 6,301 firearms in 2022 — a “nearly 10% increase over 2021’s record level” of 5,972, according to aTSA tells flyers to declare firearms and ammo to airlines at check-in and check each airline’s policies.
Unloaded firearms must be stored in a “locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only.” Replica or toy firearms are also limited to checked baggage. Guidelines consider a firearm “loaded” when “both the firearm and ammunition are accessible to the passenger.”“For example, if an individual has a firearm in accessible baggage and ammunition in his/her pocket, or any combination where the individual has access to both, the firearm is considered ‘loaded’ for purposes of assessing a civil penalty,” the TSA’s website states.
