Against long odds, the University of Utah football team gets a chance to defend its Pac-12 championship. The Utes' victory over Colorado — plus help from around the conference this weekend — sends them to a matchup with USC.
Utah beat Colorado, and got wins from UCLA, Oregon State, and Washington to book return trip to Las Vegas
All of that created a three-way tie between the Utes, Ducks, and Huskies at 7-2 in conference games, with Utah getting the nod based on the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker. The 11-1 Trojans, 38-27 winners Saturday over Notre Dame and currently No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings, are likely to be in the top 4 when the new CFP rankings are released Tuesday after No. 2 Ohio State and No. 5 LSU both lost Saturday. That means USC is likely not playing for a spot in the Rose Bowl, but rather a spot in the College Football Playoff, which has the Peach and Fiesta Bowls as semifinals this season.
As a point of reference, the last Pac-12 team to reach the College Football Playoff was Washington in 2016 as the No. 4 seed. The Rose Bowl wound up taking the next-highest ranked team, No. 9 USC. No. 10 Colorado lost to the Huskies in that season’s Pac-12 championship game.
