The woman had a yearslong history of child neglect before her son drowned in 2021 in Lancaster County.
A woman has pleaded no contest in the 2021 drowning death of her 5-year-old son in the Susquehanna River, shown here, near Bainbridge, Lancaster County. Autumn Vossler, 30, stood before Judge Dennis Reinaker in a Lancaster County courtroom as Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ponessa described a pattern of neglect of her children that led to the drowning death of her 5-year-old son Romin in August 2021.
Ponessa said Vossler claimed to investigators that she had been with the children at the time, but her two daughters told police they had been alone. In interviews, Vossler’s children told police she told them to say she was with them at the river so she would not be arrested, according to an affidavit.. We never saw you, we snuck out of the house,” the affidavit said.
“I was not shocked,” Hoffman told the court via video call from her home in South Carolina, “just hit with anger.” She described Romin as “full of life and love” and said he was a “sweet boy with a smile that brightened the room.” “Your honor, if I could go back to that day and trade places with my son, I would in a heartbeat,” Vossler said to Reinaker.
Churchville asked Reinaker to consider a mitigated sentence and allow Vossler to serve her sentence in Potter County to be closer to family.
