According to Outdoor Life, Wherley hooked the fish using a foot-long trout at a favorite spot near Safe Harbor Dam. Realizing he had just landed a potential record, he hustled to Columbia Bait and Tackle, which had a state-certified scale. Jeff Schmidt, with the Pennsylvania Fist and Boat Commission, was there for the weigh-in, and also inspected the catch.“The fish got that big by living a long time,”Wherley said his previous best flathead catch was 44 pounds.
