With eyes on the Group of Five spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff , UTSA stressed coming out of the gates strong in 2024, needing to be in top form during the nonconference season to start building a resume. For about 20 minutes Saturday, the Roadrunners looked every bit the part of a contender. New starting quarterback Owen McCown orchestrated three clean touchdown drives to begin the game, and UTSA ’s defense hardly seemed tested by Kennesaw State ’s option offense.
McCown delivered his first scoring pass on a 2-yard connection with Devin McCuin less than three minutes into the game, then converted the second touchdown of the game on the ground, diving in and skidding through the end zone from 5 yards out. After a 61-yard connection to Robert Henry on a swing pass, McCown found McCuin uncovered on a slant pattern near the goal line for a 4-yard touchdown, putting the Roadrunners up 21-3 early in the second quarter.
