The Big Chill: A Grinch-like major winter storm threatens to disrupt one of the busiest travel days of the year.
that over 240 million people, or roughly 72% of the country’s population, are under some form of winter weather warning or advisory on the season’s busiest travel day. “Winter weather hazards remain in effect from the Canadian border south to the Rio Grande, Gulf Coast and central Florida Peninsula while spanning from the Pacific Northwest to the Eastern Seaboard,” according to an early-morning weather alert.
“Right now we have multiple major airline hubs impacted,” said Buttigieg. “In the Northwest, they're dealing with more snow coming in. In the East, it's really the winds that we're worried about. In the middle of the country, it's those extreme cold temperatures that can make it hard for ground operations to continue.”
Airlines have issued winter travel waivers allowing passengers flying in or out of impacted airports to rebook without paying the fare difference. For consumers looking to change travel plans or recoup travel expenses, much will depend upon the airline, itinerary and, in some cases, whether a travel insurance policy was purchased. Original tickets must have been purchased by a specific date and rebooked within a specific time period.
