A Sydney homeowner was shocked to discover a massive gathering of venomous red-bellied black snakes in his mulch pile. Reptile experts are baffled by the unusual phenomenon and speculate on the reasons behind the snakes' simultaneous birthing.

A Sydney homeowner was surprised to find over 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes nestled in a pile of mulch on his property. David Stein contacted Reptile Relocation Sydney after noticing several snakes slithering into the mulch and learning from online research that pregnant red-belly blacks often gather in large groups before giving birth. Snake catcher Dylan Cooper arrived and, with Stein's assistance, carefully removed 102 snakes, including both adults and newborns.

This remarkable discovery has puzzled experts who are unsure why such a large number of snakes chose Stein's property for birthing. Cory Kerewaro, owner of Reptile Relocation Sydney, stated that this was the largest haul of venomous snakes he had encountered in his career. The previous record involved 30 non-venomous carpet pythons.Experts suggest several possible reasons for this unusual phenomenon. Scott Eipper, an author specializing in Australian snakes, believes gravid red-bellied blacks may congregate for protection or due to a lack of suitable birthing habitats. He also speculates that the unusually hot weather in Sydney could have triggered the simultaneous birthing of so many snakes. Some captured snakes may be the offspring of adults who had already left the nest, further adding to the mystery. Kerewaro confirmed that the snakes, despite being a protected species, are being held in secure care until they can be released into a remote national park. This extraordinary event highlights the fascinating and sometimes unexpected behaviors of wildlife. Notably, Stein's 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier, Belle, had been bitten by a juvenile red-bellied black snake just a few months prior and needed multiple doses of antivenom. Stein was informed that snakes could return to his property to give birth in the mulch at the same time next year
