More than 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes were removed from a pile of mulch in a Sydney backyard, leaving the homeowner shaken and experts baffled.
A man in Sydney , Australia, experienced a startling discovery when over 100 venomous red-bellied black snakes were removed from a pile of mulch in his backyard. David Stein initially noticed around six snakes entering the mulch and, after researching online, learned that pregnant red-bellied black snakes often gather in large numbers before giving birth. He contacted Reptile Relocation Sydney , and snake catcher Dylan Cooper arrived to assist.
Stein helped rake away the mulch while Cooper carefully captured the snakes. Two adults even gave birth to a total of 29 snakes while Cooper was still working. Reptile Relocation Sydney owner Cory Kerewaro expressed astonishment at the sheer number of snakes, stating that while large numbers can occur during hatching season, encountering this many venomous snakes was unprecedented. Experts are unsure why so many snakes gave birth simultaneously at Stein's property. Theories include the snakes seeking safety in numbers or gathering in a suitable area for birthing, potentially triggered by exceptionally hot weather in Sydney. It's also possible that some captured snakes were offspring of adults who had already left their nests.Red-bellied blacks typically have litters ranging from 4 to 35 young. Kerewaro, who cares for the protected snakes, received permission from authorities to release them into a national park, ensuring they are far from human interaction. This event follows a previous incident where Stein's Jack Russell terrier, Belle, was bitten by a juvenile red-bellied black and required antivenom treatment. Stein has been warned that snakes may return to the mulch to give birth at the same time next year
