Stellenbosch coach clarified the reason behind Orlando Pirates full-back target Van Rooyen being benched in the MTN8 quarter-final win.
Following Stellenbosch FC’s 3-1 victory over TS Galaxy that secured their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals, head coach Steve Barker addressed why Deano Van Rooyen, the club’s captain, did not start the match. Despite heavy speculation linking the 27-year-old defender to Pirates, Barker clarified that Van Rooyen’s absence was due to a minor injury rather than transfer rumours.
Barker explained that the decision to start Kyle rather than Van Rooyen was strategic, considering the pitch conditions and the need to avoid exacerbating Van Rooyen’s injury. “We thought because of the pitch, it might become that type of game, where Kyle is a bit more suited, and also obviously protecting Deano from further aggravating the injury. So that was the main cause.”
The South African previously reported that Pirates’ preference is a direct purchase of Van Rooyen, highlighting their commitment to acquiring him outright. Stellenbosch FC has responded by offering Van Rooyen a contract extension to retain his services, according to. Nonetheless, insiders suggest that Stellenbosch might be preparing for Van Rooyen’s potential departure, considering his prominent role and the growing interest from other clubs.
