Oppenheimer's second weekend gross brings its cumulative total to nearly $400 million, outgrossing all but 5 Christopher Nolan movies in just 10 days.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In its second weekend, the total gross of Oppenheimer is already giving other hit movies a run for their money. The movie, which was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy as the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, opened opposite Barbie on July 21. Although the movie opened at No. 2, it grossed a whopping $82.5 million at the domestic box office that weekend.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Oppenheimer box office is currently projected to bring in an additional $46 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters. This will bring its cumulative worldwide total to $395.4 million, surpassing the entire box office grosses of previous Nolan efforts Batman Begins and Tenet. This means that, in just 10 days, Oppenheimer has become Nolan's sixth highest-grossing movie of all time.
What Other Nolan Titles Could Oppenheimer Overtake? Oppenheimer’s box office gross has been smashing records left and right. In addition to already ranking so high among Nolan's previous movies, it just scored the second-best weekend 2 gross for an R-rated movie behind Marvel's Deadpool 2 in 2018. It remains to be seen how high it can climb, but so far its box office future looks rosy.
So far, Oppenheimer is still lagging behind the Nolan movies Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. It should be relatively easy for it to outgross Dunkirk's $527 million worldwide total. However, Nolan's other titles, especially the Batman sequels, will provide much more competition.
Even if it keeps up this unparalleled box office run for weeks to come, Oppenheimer likely won't exceed the totals of either The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises. Both movies are billion-dollar titles that have the advantage of a strong IP connection and PG-13 ratings that allowed a broader swath of audience members access to screenings. However, ranking fifth or fourth among such strong competition is still no small feat for a three-hour historical biopic.
