Star Benny Safdie remembers the very specific note he received from Christopher Nolan regarding his Oppenheimer character, Edward Teller.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Oppenheimer star Benny Safdie recalls getting a very specific character note for his portrayal of Edward Teller. Starring Cillian Murphy in the title role, Oppenheimer chronicles the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, a key figure in the creation of the first atomic bomb.
Now, in a recent interview with Vulture following the release of Oppenheimer in theaters, Safdie reveals that Nolan actually had a very specific note involving his eyebrows. The note was in service of achieving a look closer to that of the real-life Teller, who had very thick brows. Check out Safdie's full comment below:
"And I am proud to say that it’s all my eyebrows. Teller had the best eyebrows. Every once in a while I have a straggler that I’ll just pluck out, cause it looks a little too crazy. But Chris said, 'Don’t do that. Let’s just let it go crazy.' I had the most insane eyebrows for months and months, and you just had to brush them out and then they shined in all their glory.
Charles Oppenheimer, the physicist's real-life grandson, for example, recently expressed general praise for the film, but took issue with the scene in which Robert Oppenheimer attempts to poison one of his professors with a poison apple. This event is also alluded to in American Prometheus, but the relative says that there is no such record of ever such an event taking place, calling it a "serious accusation" and "historical revision".
As a film, of course, Oppenheimer takes some creative liberties with its characters in the interest of telling a compelling story, but details about Oppenheimer's role in the creation of the atomic bomb and the subsequent hearing spearheaded by Lewis Strauss are generally correct. Even Albert Einstein and Oppenheimer's friendship as it is portrayed in the film is generally considered to be relatively true to life.
