Opinion: With Colorado River negotiations settled, it's time to focus on water conservation plans [Opinion]
While there has been criticism that relying on federal dollars is not a long-term solution, it is the only way to make this work in the near-term without devastating food production and rural communities throughout the Colorado River Basin.
In addition, funding comes from the Inflation Reduction Act, which was passed by Congress in 2021, not new tax dollars. Prior to this agreement, the Imperial Valley had been conserving an average of 500,000 acre-feet of water every year, totaling over 7 million acre-feet since 2003. Other agricultural and municipal Southern California water districts have also done their part, further reducing dependence on the Colorado River.
Developing new sources of water is similarly critical, including increased use of recycled water, desalination and more in both the Upper and Lower Basin states.
