Opinion: What social media sites are San Diegans gravitating toward? [Opinion]
— Former Twitter junkie here. For me, Facebook is about friends and family and personal reflection, Instagram is a place to share a photo very rarely, Post was something I cherished briefly but haven’t used for months. I still lurk on Twitter, but don’t share much. My note of support Wednesday for dear departing friends at the U-T was met with toxicity from too many people. More people showed their humanity, and I will remember that, but at some point Spotify is better for the soul.
In my opinion, what distinguishes Substack writers and readers from other social media sites is the primacy of reading content — in terms of both quantity and quality. If you prefer the brevity of Twitter’s character count limit, or the images that dominate Instagram, you may not want to invest the time required to read the more in-depth, often sophisticated commentary that most Substack writers provide to their readers.
If Substack writers are willing to assume the responsibility for providing accurate, thoughtful and relevant information without the toxic tone often attributed to other social media sites, then the future is bright for this social media platform and the choice it provides to writer and readers.I permanently deleted my Facebook account last year because I’m of the opinion that it’s destroying civil society.
For information and occasional games I turn to newspapers, TV and nature and alumni magazines. However, since I do not subscribe to social media, I am finding crossword puzzles increasingly puzzling because I do not know current entertainers or TV shows. Ditto for having any idea who the celebrities are who are having birthdays as listed in the newspaper.
