last weekend was the perfect response to the letters on the opposing page criticizing his previous column. And because you can’t reason with a brick wall, I’m sure it will spawn another volley of angry letters from those who are addicted to the false equivalence dispensed by conservative media.

Sorry, but I don’t see Democrats attempting a coup because they lost an election, then trying to whitewash a deadly insurrection as “legitimate political discourse.” I don’t see Democrats boycotting presidential debates. I don’t see folks at Democratic campaign rallies talking about arming themselves to take their country back by force. And I don’t see liberal pundits leaving MSNBC in droves because it knowingly airs false information.

This is not a “both sides” thing. Since Newt Gingrich was House Speaker, a cynical contingent of Republicans has been consolidating its power by making people angry, then leveraging that anger to demonize Democrats, along with any Republican moderates who question increasingly radical dogma. The conservative media has contributed to and profited from this arrangement, one in which there are few disincentives for spreading false information.

With inherent flaws and biases, the press is fair game to criticism, but when you run out of credible arguments, you don’t get to just make stuff up. I am constantly amazed at how easily manipulated people become once you tell them they’re too smart to fall for mainstream media.I believe a newspaper columnist’s job is to offer readers his reflections, thoughts or viewpoints.
