Opinion: San Diego County supervisors are right to call special election to replace Nathan Fletcher [Opinion]

on May 15 after former Metropolitan Transit System public relations officer Grecia Figueroa alleged in a lawsuit that Fletcher had sexually harassed and assaulted her. Ever since, there have been big questions about Fletcher’s abuse of power as chair of the MTS board and about whether the four other supervisors would appoint a replacement, call for a special election or do both, just months into Fletcher’s second four-year term.

Thankfully, on Tuesday, supervisors voted unanimously to replace Fletcher as soon as possible, with a primary election on Aug. 15, followed by a runoff on Nov. 7 if no candidate gets a majority of votes in the primary. This is far better than appointing someone either to serve out Fletcher’s term or to serve until a special election is held. The public should weigh in.This plan won’t be cheap — the up to $5.
