Opinion: San Diego County Sheriff's office must embrace transparency [Opinion]
” : The U-T’s monitoring of inmate safety in our jails, along with the state auditor’s report and the recent update report from the sheriff, illustrate a prime cause of these problems is the failure of our county, state and nation to address mental health needs.
This profound inadequacy compounds problems throughout our society, affecting the mentally ill, their families and those incarcerated with them. However, the sheriff’s update report also brushes aside other issues of jail safety, including transporting drugs into jails, failure to screen employees and continued opaqueness of review board findings restricted by the sheriff to bare summaries. The latter practice would have resulted, for example, in the George Floyd murder being reported to the public as “Black male; resisted arrest; stopped breathing; unresponsive to resuscitation.
We need details. I hope the sheriff understands we expect more extensive, faster improvements than she seems to be pursuing.
