Opinion: Growing up among fellow Asian Americans in Mira Mesa taught me the importance of community [Opinion]

is a student, activist and former board member of the San Diego Unified School District who lives in Mira Mesa.

My words are the scaffolding of my life’s architecture: a constant flow of plan, design, construction and renovation.More significant, though, is the impact of these words, and how mine can uplift others. While my “future self” varies daily, a steadfast zeal for community is constant. I am exactly the person I am today because of community, and this fundamental truth informs my every decision. It’s the reason I ran for a seat on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education.

Representing around 100,000 students meant constructing multiple frameworks for communication and collaboration. The Student Advisory Board, coupled with regular school tours by Trustee Matthew Quitoriano and me, enabled us to bring student perspective directly to the dias. Concerns about safety and sustainability were recurring, made clear the moment we stepped foot on campuses and even more clear when followed by the solutions we put forth.
