Opinion: Golden State Teacher Grant program is crucial. Don’t end it now.

affects students, families, and the stability of our schools. Too often, classrooms are staffed by substitutes, rotating teachers, or educators working outside their credential area — leaving students without the consistent support they need to succeed.

Strong partnerships with families and communities depend on trust, and trust is built through stable relationships in our classrooms. When we recruit and retain strong teachers, student achievement improves — especially for historically underserved students. Yet one of the most effective tools California has to fill vacancies with qualified teachers is about to disappear.is a state-funded initiative that supports teacher recruitment by providing $10,000 grants to teacher candidates to help offset the cost of credentialing programs. In exchange, grant recipients commit to teach for two years in one of California’s priority schools — campuses with high concentrations of students who are low-income, English learners and foster youth — after earning their credential. Students in these high-needs schools — many of whom are historically underserved Black and Latino students — are twice as likely to be taught by underqualified teachers compared with those in the highest-income schools. The scale of the inequity is significant: During the 2023-24 school year, an estimated 35,182 California teachers were not fully credentialed for their teaching assignment, affecting around 750,000 students.to priority schools — providing hundreds of thousands of students statewide with greater access to prepared educators. In San Diego County, more than 500 schools are designated priority schools , andBut building a strong pipeline is only part of the solution — we must also ensure that California’s teacher workforce reflects the diversity of our communities. As an educator leader of thewhen Black students have at least one Black teacher in their early years of schooling, they are 13% more likely to graduate high school and 19% more likely to attend collegefound that Golden State Teacher Grant recipients are more racially and ethnically diverse than California’s existing teacher workforce: in fact, 55% of grant recipients identify as Hispanic or Latino, compared with just 26% of the statewide teacher workforce. Teaching is an incredibly rewarding — and challenging — profession, and schools must be able to cultivate stable environments for staff. Retention is essential to that stability. Greater retention allows schools to optimize budgets. High turnover creates significant costs, from professional development and mentorship for new hires to the time administrators spend posting jobs, reviewing applications, and conducting multiple rounds of interviews — time that could otherwise be focused on instruction and student success. Despite its relatively brief service requirement, recipients of the Golden State Teacher Grant are providing long-term stability in high-needs communities: in fact,Even with its demonstrated effectiveness at addressing the state’s ongoing teacher shortage, increasing teacher diversity and improving teacher retention rates, the program is set to end this year unless our state leaders act. At a time when teachers are scarce, California cannot afford to lose effective incentives like the Golden State Teacher Grant Program. I urge the governor and the Legislature to reconsider the decision to sunset this program and instead provide the $100 million needed to sustain it in the coming budget. This level of funding equates to around 10,000 credentialed teachers entering high-needs schools and supporting over 200,000 students. For communities like mine, that support is critical for the success of our students and the strength of our schools.
