Opinion: Gifted education still has an important role in California and San Diego [Opinion]

” : I am a former college professor, with two children who both took AP courses in high school. One has a PhD, the other is a much sought-after mechanical designer. The arguments that Michelle Irwin makes against AP classes are specious and untrue.A student said, “people should have the opportunity to try.”

“Some students are not ready to take many AP courses.” So what. That’s life. It should not allow us to reduce each student to the “norm.” There are many jobs that do not require a college education.“No one knew about the new policy before it was actually enacted.” Again, whom does she think she works for?

She should be encouraging her students to become involved in the International Baccalaureate program. That would put her school on the map as the place for students to WANT to go!
