Opinion: Election results show it's time for Republicans to leave the cult of Trump behind [Opinion]
On Tuesday — one week after Election Day, when Republicans failed to live up to lofty expectations — former president and perpetual big liar Donald Trump is expected to make a “major” announcement. The 2022 election won’t yet be over — control of Congress will still be undecided as votes continue to be counted, ahem, legally — but Trump may officially jump into the 2024 presidential election.
It was just Monday, remember, when nearly all pundits assumed the House was on the brink of being firmly controlled by Republicans and most expected the Senate to change hands as well. This wasn’t just seen as likely because of the long-established historical pattern of a newly elected president’s party getting annihilated in the subsequent midterm elections — and because of public anxiety over the worst inflation in 40 years.
