After difficult election losses, we should reflect on disturbing trends edging some in our party toward GOP traits.

A generation ago, Democrats rightfully criticized Republicans for several bad traits. We believed they demonized their opponents, using McCarthyist tactics of harshly labeling people with whom they disagreed. For much of the Cold War, Republicans called anyone who proposed any type of social program a “commie” or “pinko.”Republicans also tried to censor people with whom they disagreed.

And just a decade ago, Democrats watched with amusement and dismay as the Tea Party pushed the Republican Party further from the center, with its disruptive methods, unrealistic politics, and disdain for bipartisanship and conciliation. I also see a disturbing, related, authoritarian trend among some Democrats to favor censorship — whether on social media, or with cancel culture generally. But just like we asked Republicans a generation ago, what are we so afraid of? That the public might read something, hear something, or see something that we don’t like or that makes us uncomfortable? This is no reason to support suppressing ideas.
